Mark 2:13-17, v. 17 "They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." All are sick (imperfect) and have need of a physician (Savior). If I want to be like the Savior do I pass by those that are sick and not offer assistance? Do I call on the Savior to heal me? In the Christmas Devotional, Sister Burton asked if when life throws it's challenges do we look more towards the Savior or farther away from him.
John 5;17-47, v.19 "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise." I just love this doctrine. We can become like our Heavenly Father. Heavenly Father wants me to be able to do what he does. The Savior is here to make that happen. v.21 "For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will." Immortality is a free gift to all, though those that follow the gospel of Jesus Christ are raised up because the Savior mediates for them. v.30 "my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." One way to know if my judgment is good or if there is wisdom in my choices is by seeking the Lord's will in whatever is decided. Does that make sense? v.39 "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." Searching the scriptures helps me to come unto Christ and to learn about him and come to know him personally; it can only help me to seek Christ more in my life. How am I doing with my scripture study? Is it consistent? Everyday? This helps me to keep my baptismal covenant to remember him always so that his spirit will always be with me.

Matt 12:1-21 v.12 "Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days." How important it is to be engaged on Sunday. It is a day of doing well. Mark 2:23-3:12 v. JST 26 "Wherefore the Sabbath was given unto man for a day of rest; and also that man should glorify God, and not that man should not eat;" I think of Elder Nelson's talk in April 2015 about the Sabbath. What sign do I want to give the Lord?...That I firstly love him (ie. go to church, pray, study the scriptures, fast) and that I love my fellowman as he loves them (ie. visit and spend time with them, heal them, serve). My fellowman includes my family and even myself. Spending time with family is important on the Sabbath day. Sleeping is good, not working and allowing others the opportunity to not work. These all show love for my fellowman. I think that the Lord wants me to be engaged on this day. It is a day devoted to showing love. Luke 6:1-11 v.9 "Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?"

Luke 6:12-16 v.12 "And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God." I am so struck at how much Christ prayed to Heavenly Father. He always went someplace alone. When was the last time that I poured out my soul to God and really communicated with him? How can I make my prayers more meaningful? Thoughts-make a list of things I want to talk to Heavenly Father about, think about what I want to say, ask for the Holy Ghost to guide me, talk to him about everything (ie spill my guts). Christ must have really come to know Heavenly Father. He had to have faith too before he received a witness and gained knowledge. Prayer must be a major way that faith can be increased. After that night, Christ then acted. It is important to then act on the prayer given.

Luke 6:17-49 Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount. There is so much meat in the Sermon on the Mount. A good sum up would be to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. How fitting for Christmas Day. v.35 "But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend (be generous), hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great." I love this verse. Christ wants me to seek to do good, to think of others, to give of my time, talents, and everything that the Lord has blessed me with. How hard sometimes to give or lend with no thought of compensation or reward for the good deeds. It seems like love (selfless looking out to others) helps to accomplish this. How can I seek to love others? I feel like it is important to start where I am and the Lord will bless me. v.38 "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom." The blessings are great for those who look to others. I feel like this means that the right blessing will be given at the right time in the right portion. v.37 "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:" A reminder to not be critical, but supportive of others.

Matt 5:1-47, v.3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit" This means those who don't have pride and are humble. 3 Nephi 12:3 adds "...the poor in spirit who come unto me." Key is to come unto Christ. v.6 "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." This means to do my best and where I fall short will be strengthened, made up, filled. v.28 "Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." The Savior is talking about how our thoughts lead to greater sin such that how important it is to watch our thoughts. As a man thinketh, so is he. Our thoughts mold us into who we are. What do I fill my mind with? What thoughts are always on my mind? Do I have optimistic or pessimistic thoughts? Filling my mind with good, wholesome, optimistic thoughts will turn me into a good, wholesome, optimistic person more than I am. v.37 "But let your communication be, Yea, yea; nay, nay for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." I like this. It is simple and straightforward. It is important to not beat around the bush and use less sacrasm or being indirect more than direct. I need to work on this. v.41 "And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain." I may not may not have a choice on going a mile with another but I can certainly choose to go another mile with him/her. That is powerful to me. It seems like this would take out the selfishness as I am looking to another. v,46 "For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye?" Interesting thought...it may be easier to love those who love us, but the growth/learning/love comes when we love those who don't love us. It seems like miracles can happpen and the Atonement can really work in situations like this. Example, a drunk driver kills several members of a family and the father forgives him. Who can I love besides my family and friends?

Elder Larry R. Lawrence What Lack I Yet? Matt 5:48 "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." I have always been bothered by this. This commandment cannot happen by our own efforts in this life. It can only happen with the assistance of Christ in this life and our efforts in the world to come. Elder Lawrence refers to this as eternal progression. Christ is admonishing us to learn and improve. "We came to learn and improve until we gradually become santified or perfected in Christ." The best way to learn and improve is to seek divine guidance and ask some questions: "What do I need to change? How can I improve? What weakness needs strengthening? What lack I yet?" Through prayer we can ask for answers and the Holy Ghost can then help us. The best time to do this is during sacrament meeting. "The Holy Ghost doesn't tell us to improve everything at once. If He did, we would become discouraged and give up. The Spirit works with us at our own speed, one step at a time." I like this. Line upon line. Elder Bednar said, "Most of us clearly understand that the Atonement is for sinners. I am not so sure, however, that we know and understand that the Atonement is also for saints--for good mean and women who are obedient, worthy, and conscientious and who are striving to become better." I love the hope that this brings. I can become better. "Be persistent...but never be discouraged." This is wise counsel. The adversary tries to discourage. It is a major tool against good people who are trying. Never give up. What goals can I make to improve my life? What lack I yet?

December Week 4- Linds

John 5:17 "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." --> Spiritual work. Jesus was being criticized for "working" on the Sabbath. Our Sabbaths should not be filled with lazying about the house and sleeping in. We should be actively trying to find ways to serve and love. Also, do I put as much effort into the spiritual goals I have? They are work too. And I should expect spiritual change and challenge to be as hard as temporal work/profession. Also really interesting to note that the Savior was always working. Work is a spiritual principle.

Luke 6:12 "that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God"--> Interesting and powerful that Jesus both felt the need to pray (did he really need to pray? He already knew everything) and that he prayed so long. I am not harnessing this power enough in my daily struggles.
Alma 7:11-13 Christ suffered so that He can succor us. I have been thinking lately about how we can't expect others to understand us. When we long for validation, comfort, etc, we should really turn to Christ because He is the only source that can fulfill that need fully. "Succor" to me means that He not only understands but actively helps us bear burdens.
2 Nephi 2:8 no one can dwell with God except through the "merits, mercy, and grace" of Christ--> these three words stuck out to me. Really, we don't do anything to earn salvation. Sometimes there is a culture that mistakenly thinks we earn His grace by our merits (deeds) but we don't even do that! Everything that I am blessed with is through these three things. This is why it's so important to be grateful.

Mark 1:40-42 the leper comes seeking physical healing but asks, "make me clean," referring to spiritual healing. Do I seek Him fully aware of my areas where I need cleansing? How often do I seek him with this intention? It requires faith and Jesus only responds after He recognizes the leper and his family have faith. Why did the Savior spend so much of His ministry healing?
Matt 9:12-13
12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

Really what Jesus is referring to is the attitude of people. In reality we are all sick and in need of a Savior, but some of us are less aware, more content or complacent, less wanting to change than others. Humility is so vital for building my relationship with Him. He can not help us when we are not humble enough to realize we are sick and need His help. That is really th deciding factor in our relationship with Him. Are we humble or are we prideful?

John 5:9,14-15 "made him whole" this is repeated 4 times. Interesting word choice if in reference to physical ailments- more likely that it alludes to spiritual sin. How often do I feel incomplete, flawed? Often! This is beautiful and also reminds me of the definition of "perfection" some people reference. Perfection meaning whole, complete and not necessarily without sin. Christ makes up for what I can not do, so with Him, I am "whole." (Complete and enough)!

December Week 3 - Samuel
Ponderize Scripture: John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
Monday 12/14
John 3:1-36 v. 16 "that whosoever believeth in him..." What does believeth mean? It is a form of action. I think of how do people see me...Do I have the attributes or am seeking the attributes of Christ? Service to others? Do I know and utilize the Atonement daily in my life? Do I know Christ? Have I felt the Holy Ghost testify of him (touch my heart)? v.36 talks about receiving of 'his fulness'. To me that means being cleansed and enabled. It means that I have peace of conscience and an assurance that things will work out. v.35 says that the fulness comes by the Holy Ghost. It is what actually cleanses and fills with light.

Mark 6:16-20 v. 20 "For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and a holy man, and one who feared God and observed to worship him; and when he heard him he did many things for him, and heard him gladly." Interesting the impact that John had on Herod. Being a good person and striving to live the gospel helps one to have a positive impact on others. 'Fearing' is having respect for someone, having admiration, and even love. Herod respected John and John respected the Lord.
John 4:4-42 v.14 Christ is the living water. Why? The Atonement makes it possible to live forever and to have eternal life. "whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst;" What does never thirsting mean? v. 23 "...the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth...for unto such hath God promised his Spirit. And they who worship him, must worship in spirit and in truth." What does it mean to worship in spirit and in truth? I assume in spirit means not being able to see God, thus one must use faith (ie prayer, commandments, following example). Truth to me means a couple of things; both with real intent and in the correct way (ie baptism, sacrament, priesthood, ordinances, temple).

John 4:43-35, v.44 "Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country." The people who are closest to us see our faults and weaknesses and the tendency is for them to be critical and judgmental of our potential. Jesus received that same treatment. A higher way would be to be supportive and encouraging and to have eyes that see the good in someone and their potential, not their impediments. It is easy to see the bad, harder to see the good, but divine to see the potential.
John 4: 46-54, A nobleman's son is healed. The miracle was proceeded with faith (ACTION). The nobleman journeyed far to find Jesus. When Jesus told him (ie a commandment) he obeyed not knowing beforehand the why and that every hour the son was healed. The man showed faith coming to Jesus and that faith increased as he obeyed the Lord's commands. Tender mercies were then poured out upon him and he received the gospel. How applicable that is for me. Go the extra mile with the Lord and miracles will occur.

Uchtdorf A Summer with Great-Aunt Rose "Faith in the Savior taught me that no matter what happened in the past, my story could have a happy ending...'And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.'...'why get swallowed up in past or present things that don't go quite the way we planned?'...'When we love God, we want t o serve Him. We want to be like Him. When we love our neighbors, we stop thinking so much about our own problems and help others to solve theirs...That is what makes us happy.' What a profound story about faith, hope, and charity. Faith in God and that he can do all things leads to hope and that hope helps to cultivate our love for God and then to others. That love is what makes people happy. It sounds so simple. Put God first, keep his commandments to show your faith and that will bring hope that things will work out. That leads to love in God and then to our fellowmen. This is so simple and profound and powerful. I love reading and listening to this talk again and again.

Luke 4: 16-30, v. 24 "Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country." Also v. 27 "And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian." Jesus was speaking of the lack of faith and hardheartedness of the Jews. The ones closest to us are the most critical of us. The Jews didn't have the faith to believe that the Messiah had come, especially from "Joseph's son".
Luke 4:31-32, v. 32 "They were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power." Power comes from God through the Holy Ghost. When I am worthy and seeking the Holy Ghost, he will testify unto the hearts of man and the word will have power.
Matt 4: 13-16, v. 16 "The people which sat in darkness saw great light..." Christ is light. Look to him and one will see light (truth, understanding, wisdom, courage, power, peace, etc...).

Matt 4:18-22, Jesus calls his disciples. v.20 "And they straightway left their nets, and followed him." To me, they were touched by the Holy Ghost or something like that, but I like how they responded when they felt the prompting. They followed. I can't imagine how hard it would be to immediately leave a life that you have currently for something completely new and foreign.
Mark 1:16-20, v.17 "Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men." What does it mean to me to be a fisher of men. The Savior extends the invitation to all of us disciples...in following the Savior and really coming to know of his Atonement and being converted we will want to share the Gospel. It will seem to radiate from us. Truly striving to live the gospel will encourage one to do missionary work.
Luke 5:1-11, This tells of how before Jesus called Peter and others to be his disciples a miracle occurred. v.5 "Master, we have toiled all night, and have taken nothing; nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net." Peter had faith already and trusted Jesus. They caught a ton of fish (faith precedes the miracle) and from henceforth followed Jesus. Interesting how a little miracle does such great things and even more so that the nets almost broke and the ships started to sink, though they didn't. To me, the Lord gives us as much as we can handle both with challenges and with blessings. Tender mercies can bless our lives in magnificent ways. Sometimes all we need is a little nudge, a little encouragement.

Mark 1:35-39, v.35 "And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." I really like this. How important it is to have some time alone to commune with God, to ponder and reflect. Being a perfect example, the Savior required some solitary time; therefore, how much more is needed for me. I think it is so interesting how the morning is described. How can I improve my morning devotional with the Lord?
Mark 1:40-45, Jesus heals a leper and the leper spreads the news of his healing. v."...insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter." My thought was that everyone needs the Savior. He is the answer. No matter where one lives, or what their situation in life is, all need to come to the Savior to be healed.
Luke 5:16 "And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed." It just seems like this is so important. There must be time to commune with God alone.

To me, this means that Christ can forgive sins because of the Atonement and it is as important for me to forgive others of their shortcomings. Healing occurs in either case, whether spiritually or physically because of the Atonement. Both require faith and the man with palsy friends had showed enough faith for the man to be healed both physically as well as spiritually.

There is no explanation, no elaboration, nothing He has to prove. From the very beginning to the very end, it's a matter of faith and belief. Will we choose to follow him or not? It's as simple as that. Being a disciple means following Him.

John 4:13-14 (Isaiah 55:1-3) These are some of my favorite scriptures/concept. I love the idea that the gospel satisfying fully our needs and that so many times we pursue things to temporarily fix what is wrong. I see this a lot in the world (drinking to cope with insecurities, overreating to cope with stress, etc). But do I see it in my own life? I think sometimes I spend too much time on facebook, social media, or other "temporary fixes" for my boredom or time, when in actuality that may not be the best way to use my time and build others. Not that they aren't good tools, we just don't always use them as tools.
John 4:34 "I have meat to eat that ye know not of"--the disciples were fixated on temporal things. Jesus was always referring to spiritual things. What correlations/metaphors do I see of temporal things to spiritual things? Here, Jesus is referring to the daily sustenance of food for our bodies in relation to the daily sustenance we should and need to seek for our Spirits. Am I seeking daily to nourish my testimony? Make spiritual pursuits a priority, or I will "starve"

Matt 4:19-20, 22 Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, James, John to be apostles. It is interesting that the scriptures detail not only that all four followed Jesus's simple counsel to "Follow me" but also how they followed the Savior. "immediately" and "straightway left their nets" --> It's not only important that we choose to follow Him but how we follow Him. How do I follow the Savior? Am I immediate when asked to do something for my calling or for others?
Luke 5: 2-11 Simon who "toiled all the night, and have taken nothing" receives the Savior's counsel to "Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught." The visual of how the Savior helps Simon to succeed as a fisherman is powerful to me! The Savior can and will help us succeed in "worldly" or temporal pursuits when we follow Him and turn to Him for help and praise for our successes. I feel really strongly about this and see this in my life so much. We can do SO much more when include the Lord, and really, when we give it all to Him. Why did the Savior perform this miracle? And what significance does "fishers of men" have? As we turn to Him and make missionary work a priority and a desire in our lives, He will show miracles and gather those who are ready to hear and act on the Gospel. Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel and be ready and willing.

Luke 4: 33-37 everyone is not astonished at what Jesus says necessarily, but the power and authority behind it. Interesting to note that this power (Priesthood) is already being referenced here in the New Testament. What experiences have I had recently with the Priesthood? Do I utilize that power in my life enough? Both in my personal life and in my missionary efforts?

The capacity for awe, as it grows, brings with it the capacity for respecting fellow human beings, flaws and all." (quoting Paul Woodroff)
-Reverence (and awe) as explained here remind me of gratitude. Gratitude really should come from a "deep understanding of human limitations." Do I have this deep understanding? Do I often mistakenly think this understanding with putting myself down, being hard on myself, etc? This kind of thinking comes from Satan and is a cheap form of real humility. I love the definition above because it ties it back to our relations with other people. If we have reverence and awe for what lies out of our control (the good and the bad), then we will be filled with understanding and charity for others. My dad is a great example of this. He lives with a gratitude for life itself and it is manifest in the way he interacts with others.

D&C 19:15-16 Christ suffered that we might not suffer. This is power, and the ultimate unselfish act. Was he worried that many would not follow Him or appreciate His sacrifice? No! Was he kept back from sacrificing because he knew most people would not choose to follow Him? No. As I seek to be unselfish (in the small part like Jesus), I shouldn't be selective about my service- people don't have to be deserving to receive of my service, friendship, or kindness!
D&C 19:18 It's hard for me to comprehend the Atonement. "Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit."-->He did this all for me! And for everyone, even when we may not seem grateful and even when we can't even comprehend it. That is love! I love this!

December Week 2- Linds

Goal: Pray more intently. Send Him the correct sign.

2 Nephi 31:7 all commandments are about, "What sign do we want to give to the Lord?" Jesus was baptized to show unto us an example of humility (he actually literally didn't need it), and to witness to God that he would be obedient. Our actions are constantly telling Heavenly Father about how we feel about Him. When I forget to say prayers or don't say them well enough, what sign am I giving to my Heavenly Father? When I sacrifice my time to serve others, what sign am I showing to the Lord? When I listen to my roommates or friends when they are being difficult, what sign am I giving? When I decide to sleep longer instead of wake up earlier to read or pray, what sign am I giving?

-Four things I find really powerful:
1. Christ was led into the wilderness by the Spirit "to be tempted"--> Experiencing temptation is a necessary part of this life. I should not be surprised when I feel weak or tempted or human. It does not mean I am unrighteous, or abnormal, it means I am human, and experiencing life. The important thing is that I recognize my weaknesses, and don't become complacent, but also don't beat myself up over them.
2. Christ was tempted after he had fasted. Satan always increases his efforts after our spiritual experiences. Unfortunately, this is something else we should expect and not be surprised by or beat ourselves up by.
3. "Angels came and ministered unto him"--> As we live righteously, we can also expect the help of God in overcoming temptation and Satan's efforts. The Holy Ghost is real and will minister to us as we turn to Heavenly Father. How often do I notice angelic help? Whether in the form of others who have answered my prayers, or the Holy Ghost?
4. When I think of temptation, I think of it as a mortal, weak thing, almost like it is my fault I'm even tempted. But even Christ was tempted. Because he experienced this temptation, He knows how to help us overcome weakness. Its purpose is to bring us to Christ, surprisingly.

Christmas Devotional 2015
-Christ dispels all fear. What do I fear? How does faith in Christ and His teachings dispel that fear? For me, the Atonement covers all pain that may occur in the future. When I have faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ, I can have peace that whatever happens, I can find peace and healing through the Atonement. How have I seen that promise fulfilled in the past?
-Satan is the source of fear. Christ never uses Fear as a motivator.
-Christ is the source of all light. All things that are good and light come from Him.

December Week 2 - Samuel
Ponderize Scripture: John 8:12 "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
Monday 12/7
Luke 2:21-39, Matt 1:25; vs. 32 "A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel." I think the Gentiles are those who don't know of the gospel and Israel are the humble followers of Christ. Christ lights the true way for those who know not the path and makes salvation possible for those who do know the way. So interesting that he already has light and glory, but he is making it possible that all of his brothers and sisters may also have that light and glory. Elder Bednar said during the Christmas Devotional Dec. 6th, 2015 that Christ is light and every symbol of light is signifying of him. vs.25, "there was a man...whose name was Simeon...and the Holy Ghost was upon him." vs. 27, "and he came by the spirit into the temple," I love how guiding the Holy Ghost can be. vs. 37, "she was a widow...but served God with fastings and prayers night and day." How to have the Holy Ghost is to seek the Lord, serve him. If I seek the light, I will find it. In seeking Christ, I will find light, truth, and wisdom, which comes from the Holy Ghost.

Matt. 2:1-23; Luke 2:39-52 vs. 1 "behold, there came wise men from the east..." There weren't necessarily three wise men. What would make one a wise man? vs. 12-13, 19 - dreams are one way that the Lord can communicate with us. v. 52 "Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man." The the footnotes it says uses the word study to help define wisdom. Jesus studied intellectually (later on he knew how to ready, what the customs were...etc...), did physical exercise, took care of his body, and sought after God, which would seem to mean through prayer, scripture study, and worship. If he had to do all of these things, then how important it is for me to do these things.

Matt. 3:1-17; Mark 1:1-11; Luke 3:1-22; John 1:19-34 All four of the gospels have the baptism of Jesus. John baptized with water but Jesus brought the Holy Ghost and fire. Fire is cleansing = the Atonement of Christ. The Holy Ghost is a companion since Jesus isn't always here so no one else could have brought those than Jesus. I like the description of the Holy Ghost (dove). A dove is white, gentle, soft, inperceptible at times. Repentance comes before healing/cleansing/companionship of the Holy Ghost. I feel like John was bold and constant and diligent. These are all acts of faith. Because of his efforts he received a witness that Jesus is the Son of God.

Matt 4:1-11; vs. 1-4 bread to me is the carnal, dogmatic desires that each person has. v. 4 "Man shall not live by bread (his own carnal desires) along, but by every word (the gospel) that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." There is a higher way of living. Satan tempts us to easy, bodily, or carnal sins. vs. 5-7 refers to the temptations/sins of pride (seeking one's own glory, power, self-interests, praise of others) v. 7 "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." We must first look to God, and not to ourselves. vs. 8-11 Vanity, praise of the world over what God wants. v.10 "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." There are a lot of good things in the world, but what are the best things to do? This is easy to fall into. I like how Jesus commanded Satan to depart. This has been extremely helpful to me. Create places (homes, temples, clean minds) where Satan can't come and if he does, send him on his way.
Luke 4:1-13 vs. 1-4 I really like v. 4 where Jesus answers Satan, "It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." meaning that we need more than physical health, nutrition, and exercise. We can't also live without spiritual health, nutrition, and exercise. Interesting that this is the first temptation. How easy it is to forget to say prayers or read the scriptures.vs. 5-8 The glory of the world is immense and it is easy to worship other gods before the Lord. v.8 "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." What activities, thoughts, feelings, people stop me from putting the Lord first in my life? vs. 9-13 In what ways do I put myself up or below others? Pride is key here.

John 1:15-51 v. 16 "of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace." John is mentioning Jesus here, but I also think he is talking about the Holy Ghost. Truth is given little by little by means of the Holy Ghost. I realize how important it is to seek the Holy Ghost so as to not miss out on receiving of the fulness. v. 32 "John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him." John was prepared, clean and pure so as to see and witness the Holy Ghost. How can I seek the Holy Ghost to be with me more often?

I think of both the temple as well as my home and my body. Merchandise is temporary; it has an end. What things do I put in my body or that I bring into my house? Even good things to excess can make a house of merchandise. Good foods, but not to excess are important. Good things in the home, but not to excess are also important. I have noticed in the temple that there are nice decorations, but there is nothing excessive. The focus should be on the Lord first. Self-evaluation of those things that may be cluttering my body and my home.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf It Works Wonderfully "If you ever think that the gospel isn't working so well for you, I invite you to step back, look at your life from a higher plane, and simplify your approach to discipleship." My Dad always taught about simplifying. Sometimes, taking a step back, slowing down the pace, and focusing on what matters most is the most important. What really matters most? God should matter most. "God will take you as you are at this very moment and begin to work with you. All you need is a willing heart, a desire to believe, and trust in the Lord." It is so interesting that I don't have to know how to fix my myself or what to fix about myself; I just need to have a desire to change and become like God and he will guide me in discovering myself and how to become better.

D&C 136:32-33, wisdom is acquired, not be our own learning, but by listening and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost. The companionship of the Holy Ghost comes from our being humble and the best way is through diligent prayer to Heavenly Father. Self evaluation on how to better seek the Holy Ghost. It strikes me as being so simple, but it requires faith.

Luke 1:1-56 I am struck at the faith of Zacharias, Elisabeth, and Mary. It appears that Zacharias didn't have faith at first, but I feel like he had enough. vs. 6 "They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless." Obedience is an act of faith. Zacharias's experience only increased his faith, which was a blessing to him and his family. Mary had a lot of faith vs.46 "My soul doth magnify the Lord." Her heart was full of gratitude to God. I can't imagine how difficult it would have been to be with child as a virgin, not being wed yet...No one would understand that that didn't have the Holy Ghost to comfort them though Mary was praising God. Gratitude is very powerful...it might even be an act of faith at first, but then it magnifies and expands faith. I need to focus on being grateful.

Luke 1:57-80 The faith of Zacharias is only strengthened and he is blessed. Immediately after he has his trial of faith, his speech is restored and he immediately praises the Lord. vs. 72 & 78 "mercy" & "tender mercy of our God" which only increases his wisdom and faith. God is merciful!! Matt. 1:18-25: vs. 19 "...Joseph her husband, being a just man..." What does it mean to be just? One who seeks to do right, to be kind and fair, to have integrity, one who seeks God. One has to choose to be just; it doesn't come without work and effort and a desire to be just. Joseph had amazing qualities. He truly loved Mary, which I think with the customs of the Jews at that time was not common, at least at the beginning. They were given in marriage more than they dated and courted and fell in love. True love or charity helps one to seek the Lord. vs. 20 "while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him." Pondering is very powerful. It sets the environment for the Holy Ghost. How do I ponder? How can my pondering be improved? It is an act of faith...seeking to understand the Lord's will. Joseph then had faith to act. vs. 24 "Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife." There is faith to hear/seek God's will and then faith to act on what one has received. I bet Joseph was persecuted for taking Mary to wife, but he did it anyway. Why do we celebrate Christmas and what makes it so significant? The people didn't have the faith and humility to understand the miracle that they had heard. vs.19 "Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart." Mary shows tremendous faith, hope and charity here. What is my approach to sacred things? Do I stop and give gratitude to the Lord? Do I ask the question what more can I learn? I get the feeling that slowing down and enjoying the good things that happen is important.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf It Works Wonderfully "If you ever think that the gospel isn't working so well for you, I invite you to step back, look at your life from a higher plane, and simplify your approach to discipleship." My Dad always taught about simplifying. Sometimes, taking a step back, slowing down the pace, and focusing on what matters most is the most important. What really matters most? God should matter most. "God will take you as you are at this very moment and begin to work with you. All you need is a willing heart, a desire to believe, and trust in the Lord." It is so interesting that I don't have to know how to fix my myself or what to fix about myself; I just need to have a desire to change and become like God and he will guide me in discovering myself and how to become better.

D&C 136:32-33, wisdom is acquired, not be our own learning, but by listening and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost. The companionship of the Holy Ghost comes from our being humble and the best way is through diligent prayer to Heavenly Father. Self evaluation on how to better seek the Holy Ghost. It strikes me as being so simple, but it requires faith.

Luke 1:1-56 I am struck at the faith of Zacharias, Elisabeth, and Mary. It appears that Zacharias didn't have faith at first, but I feel like he had enough. vs. 6 "They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless." Obedience is an act of faith. Zacharias's experience only increased his faith, which was a blessing to him and his family. Mary had a lot of faith vs.46 "My soul doth magnify the Lord." Her heart was full of gratitude to God. I can't imagine how difficult it would have been to be with child as a virgin, not being wed yet...No one would understand that that didn't have the Holy Ghost to comfort them though Mary was praising God. Gratitude is very powerful...it might even be an act of faith at first, but then it magnifies and expands faith. I need to focus on being grateful.

Luke 1:57-80 The faith of Zacharias is only strengthened and he is blessed. Immediately after he has his trial of faith, his speech is restored and he immediately praises the Lord. vs. 72 & 78 "mercy" & "tender mercy of our God" which only increases his wisdom and faith. God is merciful!! She declares her own identity and sole purpose when she says, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord." Is my identity and purpose found in my relationship to Heavenly Father? My conviction should be the driving force in all that I do.
Luke 1:46-55 "My soul doth magnify the Lord."--> Mary has come to know God and is meek. It is interesting that Mary uses the word "soul"--> How do I magnify God with both my body and my spirit?

Mission of Christ (acc. to Mosiah 3:5-8):
1. working might miracles
2. HEALING* (the sick, raising the dead, lame to walk, blind to see, deaf to hear, cure diseases)
3. cast out devils and evil spirits
4. the human experience-- "dwell in tabernacle of clay," "suffer temptations and pain of body," "hunger, thirst, fatigue"--> He understands all our personal pain and can succor us (Alma 7:12-13)
5. ATONEMENT --> overcome and help us overcome (Alma 7:13)
*What is the significance of Jesus's miracles of healing? They all relate to him expanding someone's faculties, perceiving a weakness and then healing that weakness- making someone "whole"(BD Atonement). Ether 12:27 Why is it so hard to believe and apply the Atonement for my spiritual weaknesses? He demonstrated His power to heal in physical ways because they all relate to our need for Him spiritually.
Why is it significant that healing and the Atonement are separated in this verse? To me they seem to be one and the same. Although we do find healing through the Atonement, I find it significant that the Savior performed miracles of healing through His entire ministry.

Luke 2:19 "Mary pondered these things in her heart" what does it mean to ponder in your heart? It means she thought about them & allowed them to reach her heart--deep & personal. Pondering in your mind denotes a change of mind, an intellectual pursuit, whereas pondering in your heart denotes a change of self. Do I allow what I read, what happens to change who I am? Do I allow quiet spaces where I can ponder experiences I have had?
Luke 2:15-18 even with all the signs that were fulfilled "every whit," it still takes faith to believe. There will never be a time when faith is not needed in this life. It is always a choice, even when there are signs like the ones accompanying Jesus's birth.
Luke 2:4O Jesus "waxed strong in spirit and filled with wisdom"-->youth should not only seek knowledge but the application of it. True strength is measured in wisdom

Luke 2:52 "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man." How is it significant that Jesus increased not only in favour with God but with man? Although sometimes living the gospel may damage our relationship with others, we should do everything in our power to (after putting God first) get along with our fellow men. We are not islands, and living the gospel more often than not means finding common ground and loving others. Disagreement is natural, but contention is never from God.

Keeping denotes possession - she took her experiences and made them hers, let them change her (heart). Luke 3:8 John's warning to the Pharisees: "God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham" The Pharisees were apparently caught up in disbelief because they couldn't see how God could work a miracle with Abraham in his barren years (? I think?). Faith is not about reason and logistics, sometimes. Yes, God gives us reasoning to make decisions, but don't let our own reasoning about "the logistics of faith" or the "logistics of miracles" get in the way of our own faith. God can do anything He wants! Back then and now. So don't try to reason your way to faith.

Elder Neil L. Andersen Faith is Not by Chance, but by Choice "How does the Savior see your faith?" I really like this question. Self-evaluation of how I am doing. "The future of your faith is not by chance, but by choice." No person or event can affect my faith, rather I choose whether to have faith or to fear. What a fascinating idea. "Prayer, obedience, honesty, purity of thought and deed, and unselfishness increase faith." Recently, there have been some statements and changes from the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve that have caused some to question and some talk about those who seemingly follow the counsel blindly. It actually isn't blind to me, but an act of faith to trust that what the prophets say is from God, to seek that out in personal prayer, study, and fasting to confirm that answer as well as living the principles, which also confirms whether it be of God or not. Obedience is an act of faith. "There is an adversary who delights in destroying our faith!" Doubts and fears don't come from God no matter what. If they come, then it is a sure knowledge that it is from the adversary. Faith comes from God. "Immersing oneself in pesistent doubt,fueled by answers from the faithless and the unfaithful, weakens one's faith in Jesus Christ and the Restoration." I really like what President Monson said: "Fear not...The future is as bright as your faith." How can I strengthen my faith? Look to God and live!

I am blessed by working hard and looking to God, not by what God has given to me. I would have to use what God has given me to bless others before I would gain greater light and knowledge. It is always about action. Obedience keeps coming up; there is a great power in it. v. 21 "when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law..." I know that blessings do come through obedience. Sometimes those blessings are knowledge and wisdom, patience and understanding, hidden treasures...a greater desire to obey and have a peace of conscience. I think the key to obedience is diligently obeying. How can I better obey consistently?

Bennett Your Next Step "Our willingness to take a step is not just met; it is exceeded by the Lord's promised blessings...He will more than match our efforts with His power if we are willing to keep trying, repenting, and moving forward with faith in our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ." I like that it is just effort on our part, no perfection required. I just need to live, and in striving forward the Lord matches the efforts and multiplies my own strengths. This is so comforting. "Strength is given to those who keep trying." "We fail only if we fail to take another faithful step forward." The Atonement is key to all of this. It gives me strength. How can I keep this perspective? ...and trust that in doing my best, things will work out? Faith is so powerful!!!

Richard G Scott Gratitude “Despite
feelings of personal inadequacy, I am at peace. For the Lord has said, ‘And if
men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be
humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before
me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I
make weak things become strong unto them ‘ (Ether 12:27). Pride is the key here. With pride, men don’t come unto Christ
because they don’t need him, nothing is wrong.
Coming to Christ helps one to see where they fall short, to desire to
change, and to ask for help. How well am
I coming to Christ? Do I pray, study
about him, talk of him, try to be a follower, keep the commandments? I love the Grace of God. It is sufficient for all men, even for all of
my weaknesses. The Atonement can pick up
where I fall short; nothing is impossible because of it. I just feel such a deep gratitude and relief
in that the Atonement is so enabling. It
allows me to reach the glory of God and have success on the path.

marriage. Without entering into this, we

there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye
know me.” How does one not receive
Christ? Caring more what men think than what God thinks, not keeping his
commandments. Does what the world thinks
influence me more than what God commands?

Six attributes that are part of being an example of a believer (according to Paul):
1. word and conversation- being uplifting. don't be negative.

That They Do Always Remember Him (Claudio R. M. Costa)
-The biggest feeling I get from this is that part of remembering Jesus Christ every day has to do with being personally acquainted with his life and ministry. This means knowing the stories of His birth and having personal experiences with Him. How do I get that? By seeking to understand and be acquainted with His life. All of the stories that Claudio Costa quotes are from the New Testament. This is an answer to my prayer/question about what I should focus on next.
2 And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat in the wilderness, our women did give plenty of suck for their children, and were strong, yea, even like unto the men; and they began to bear their journeyings without murmurings.

Alma 53:20 "valiant for courage and strength and activity" what does that mean?
Alma 58:11 "Yea, and it came to pass that the Lord our God did visit us with assurances that he would deliver us; yea, insomuch that he did speak peace to our souls, and did grant unto us great faith, and did cause us that we should hope for our deliverance in him."-->assurances, peace, hope are answers almost stronger than other clearer answers. Valiance for courage leads to recognition of answers to prayers.

"We are prone to excuse and rationalize our faults, and sometimes we simply do not know where we should improve or how to do it. Without those who can reprove us 'betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost, we might lack the courage to change and more perfectly follow the Master." --> Do I go to church humbly wanting to know how I should change? This should be my attitude and I should be expect to be exposed to my own weakness! That is the whole point of going to church. Pray for that revelation & gain courage to enact what answers I get.

2 Tim 3:1-7 this is a perfect description of so much of what I see and feel in society now. I especially like "ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."-->learning means nothing if it does not bring me to truth & if I do not make connections to truth.
What is truth?
John 14:6 Christ is truth. All truth points to Him.
John 13:16 He will guide me to all truth.
-make connections to Christ in my studies. Seek constantly for real truth.

D&C 93:24 "truth is knowledge of things as they are, as they were, and as they are to come" (why are all three aspects important? All three allow us to have an eternal perspective. When I am caught on only one of those aspects, I am forgetting the rest of truth)
93:30 "all truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself" --> what does that mean? We are truth? Intelligence//truth
2 Nephi 2:28-29 love this scripture- do I see choices as black and white? Satan wants me to be miserable. That is his main goal. Joy comes from following the "Great Mediator."

"Do you waste the black powder on little birds?" --> service does not follow this rule. The more I give and serve, the more I have to give. The more I love, the more love I have to give. Who are the people I consider to be "little birds"? Am I giving and serving even those that society deems not worth my time?

However, taking direction is a serious challenge for most of us because pride turns direction into criticism in our minds." -->Work to accept direction more humbly from professors, parents, siblings, peers. I need all the help I can get!

"Heavenly Father and our Savior are eager to bless us. After all, They ask only for one-tenth of what They bless us with and then promise that the windows of heaven will open!
"Whenever we willingly act with faith in Jesus Christ and take another step, especially an uncomfortable step requiring change or repentance, we are blessed with strength." This may refer to tithing specifically, but it reminds me more generally of the principle of compensation and sacrifice. I have seen this over and over again in my life- as I "sacrifice" a small portion of self, time, will, to the Lord, I am always amazed at how much more He gives back, sometimes in beautiful and unexpected ways and always in greater abundance than what I have initially sacrificed. How have I seen this in my life? Free graduate education. A job and career that is hard and challenging and at the same time, incredibly worth it. The peace I feel as I keep the sabbath day far surpasses the sacrifice it is to keep it holy. The people and experiences I have with people along my journey are far more meaningful than if I had chosen another path. The strength and power of visiting Grandpa every Sunday will stay with my whole life, and far surpasses the sacrifice it was to make time for him. Matthew 19:29- whatever we sacrifice now will be rewarded hundredfold. It is worth it!

"Satan, our adversary, wants us to fail...He slyly suggests that the doubter, the skeptic, the cynic is sophisticated and intelligent, while those who have faith in God and His miracles are naive, blind or brain-washed. Satan will advocate that it is cool to doubt spiritual gifts and the teachers of true prophets."--I see this EVERY DAY on Facebook. Yes, questions are good and allow us to think deeply about the Gospel, but faith is also a deep decision, and I see so many people confusing the two, which is obviously Satan's influence.
"...there is nothing noble or impressive about being cynical. Skepticism is easy--anyone can do it. It is the faithful life that requires moral strength, dedication, and courage. Those who hold fast to faith are far more impressive than those who give in to doubt when mysterious questions or concerns arise. But it should not surprise us that faith is not valued by society. The world has a long history of rejecting that which it does not understand."--I also see this every day. It's almost popular and trendy sometimes to be cynical, but how popular is it to express true testimony? Do we see as many people doing that? It's important for me to be aware that this is actually all Satan's influence. I can choose faith. How do I make this choice daily, and how do I encourage others to?

D&C 117 Why do we covet? "that you should covet that which is but the drop, and neglect the more weighty matters?" All things are the Lord's anyway. Some things don't matter in the big scheme of things. How can I not get caught up in the small details to miss the big picture? In reading several sections, I feel that the Lord only requires that we look to him and serve him and we are blessed beyond measure. If not, we are left to our own desires and consequences.

A neat little tidbit I found in an article: "Studies have shown that 85 percent of what you worry about won't happen, and the 15 percent that does happen, you will handle better than expected and will teach you amazing lessons." It really is all about perspective. President Hinckley said the following , "it really isn't as bad as you sometimes think it is. It all works out. I say that to myself every morning. It will all work out. Put your trust in God and move forward with faith. He will not forsake us, he will not forsake us. If we put our trust in him, if we pray to him, if we live worthy of his blessings, he will answer our prayers." There is hope and light and good in this tumultuous world. There are always reasons to smile and thank and praise God. "No nightmare can defeat a child of God in his purpose" The Course in Miracles. How can I put trust in God more than I do? Follow him, pray to him, live worthily, believe that it will work out.

President Henry B. Eyring The Holy Ghost as Your Companion "The companionship of the Holy Ghost makes what is good more attractive and temptation less compelling." Seeking the Holy Ghost helps me to desire to sin less and serve God more. It seems like an eternal cycle that get smaller and smaller, which is good. "we 'will never lack for knowledge' of the truth, 'never be in doubt or in darkness,' and our 'faith will be strong, [our] joy...full'". What fabulous promises of what the Holy Ghost can do to an honest seeker. How do I seek the Holy Ghost as my constant companion? Meaningfully partaking of the sacrament, having a heart full of charity and virtue garnishing the thoughts, and having a willingness to obey. Do I follow the Holy Ghost when it whispers to me? Am I distracted or do I have noise around me? I feel like having quiet time alone to think and ponder each day is essential to this.

D&C 121:34 "There are many called, but few are chosen...because their hearts are set so much upon the things of this world, and aspire to the honors of men." How do I keep my heart focused on God and not the world and to seek acceptance of men more than God? What motivates me to do good? Love of God or to be honored by men? The priesthood (which is essentially service to others) "cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness." vs.39 "We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion." Beware of pride (looking toward oneself) and seek to look to others (selflessness). I think that is a key to serving the Lord...looking to him and others, not so much myself. What would he have me do or what can I do for others?

D&C 122:9 "...fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever." God is great; he loves his children and will stand by them. His perfect love means that the journeys of his children are made perfectly and uniquely for each one. D&C 123:17 "...let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed." I love this scripture; it is so full of faith, hope, and charity. Things do work out! The Lord is with us and will always stand by to uplift, strengthen, etc... How can I submit? or approach life? Cheerfully! I love the line "the utmost assurance", which means that it is an 100% guarantee that he will be there.

D&C 127:4 "Let the work of my temple, and all the works which I have appointed unto you, be continued on and not cease; and let your diligence and your perseverance, and patience, and your works be redoubled, and you shall in nowise lose your reward." I feel like this is a battle cry "Carry on! Carry On! Carry On!". The work of the temple must never cease. How can I redouble my efforts to make the temple and family history work a priority?

D&C 128:22 "shall we not go on in so great a cause? Go forward and not backward. Courage, brethren; and on, on to the victory! Let your hearts rejoice, and be exceedingly glad." I love this line...why shouldn't we go on in a great cause...meaning...living the gospel and in particular doing temple work is a great cause, one that I can't fully see the blessings, but they are there. I like the optimism of Joseph Smith. He was writing this while in hiding to stay protected from the evil men, but he is urging his brethren forward. Do I encourage and urge my brethren forward? The gospel is great news. Do I emanate that joy and peace so that others see it? There is so much good in the world (hard to see sometimes) but the Lord is ever with us. I really like this optimism and enthusiasm for the work and for life. How can I spread my enthusiasm to others?

Elder Vern P. Stanfill Choose the Light "we might feel embarrassed, uncomfortable, or confused spiritually when we encounter a challenge to our faith. Generally, the intensity and duration of these feelings will depend upon our reaction to them. If we do nothing, doubt, pride, and eventually apostasy may drive us from the light." How do I react when there is uncertainty or doubts come? Do I immediately look to God or am I influenced by the world? "Is it wise to place our eternal well-being in the hands of strangers? Is it wise to claim enlightenment from those who have no light to give or who may have private agendas hidden from us? The only hands that I really trust are the Lord's and even those who I know really love me and want the best for me. I realize how I need to be careful in what sources I take counsel. The internet is not the source of all righteousness or even the great and spacious building, which represents the pride of the world. "We might feel too embarrassed to ask for help when we doubt...When we realize that the light and the comfort the Savior can extend to us are far too precious to lose to pride, then inspired Church leaders, parents, and trusted friends can help." I think of the Elder Uchtdorf saying the following; doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith. Moroni 7:13 "But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God." Light will always come from God. Light and clarity come from God; doubt and confusion do not. Do I doubt my doubts? Do I have doubts? How can I turn those into faith? Turn to God, seek him, the prayer of faith.

D&C 105 the early saints really struggled with giving to the poor, or giving what their substance to those in need. I think the key here is being selfless as opposed to being selfish. How am I doing with this? I find I struggle at times with this. How can I look at others without providing a critical eye? Do I hold onto my things (stuff) and not give thanks for what the Lord has blessed me with in my life?

D&C 106:5 "gird up your loins, that you may be the children of light". Video link describing what girding up your loins means .Girding up your loins means to prepare and work hard and give service. So, to become a child of light I need to give of myself, be selfless, and do the best that I can. D&C 107:99-100 "let every man learn his duty, and to act in the office in which he is appointed, in all diligence...he that is slothful shall not be counted worthy to stand." The Lord requires that one does their best with whatever they are entrusted. That is all that he can ask, but he does give us the Holy Ghost to be our guide. I think the key is diligence or I have been calling it consistency. Am I doing the best that I can in my callings, responsibilities? I don't have to be perfect, but am I striving to be better each day?

Oaks Strengthened by the Atonement of Jesus Christ "And he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities (Alma 7:12)...He is perfectly positioned to lift us and give us the strength we need to endure our afflictions. We have only to ask." How do I have the faith to ask and to trust that my prayers will be answered, to have hope that he will succor, uplift, heal, strengthen? Many times I don't recognize how he has blessed me and is carrying me. How do I increase my faith, hope, and charity?

D&C 109. Dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple vs. 44" But thy word be fulfilled. Help thy servants to say, with thy grace assisting them: Thy will be done, O Lord, and not ours." This is really interesting...I have to ask the Lord to help me to say that his will be done. Reasons: pride, selfishness but his Grace or the Atonement helps me to have the strength to let the Lord's will be done. The enabling power of the Atonement. It is much more than forgiveness for sins, but it can enable one to overcome his/her weaknesses and turn to God. He helps us turn to him. Elder Richard G. Scott said the following "Our Heavenly Father did not put us on earth to fail but to succeed gloriously." Another word for failure is succeeding and another word for succeeding is succeeding gloriously.

When others ask what I did that weekend, do I tell them that I went to church and felt the spirit and learned a particular principle of the gospel? Do I have meaningful conversations with others or be a good friend? "As we make Christ the center of our lives, our fears will be replaced by the courage of our convictions." Focusing on Christ builds faith, which in turn drives out fear. Where there is faith, there is not fear. To me, focusing on Christ is focusing on the Atonement.

D&C 112:13 "...after their temptations and much tribulation, behold I, the Lord will feel after them, and if they harden not their hearts, and stiffen not their necks against me, they shall be converted, and I will HEAL them." All have difficulties in their lives, but it is how each deals with it that determines the outcome. The Lord wants me to turn to him (be humble). I like this promise...that the Lord feels after us...he doesn't leave us; he is ever close. I think of the door that has no outside doorknob and the Savior stands outside this door waiting for us to open the door from the inside. Does healing mean, enabled by the Atonement or weak things made strong? How can I better seek the Lord so that I can be healed? There is so much more to the Atonement than I have ever realized.

Elder Vern P. Stanfill Choose the Light "we might feel embarrassed, uncomfortable, or confused spiritually when we encounter a challenge to our faith. Generally, the intensity and duration of these feelings will depend upon our reaction to them. If we do nothing, doubt, pride, and eventually apostasy may drive us from the light." How do I react when there is uncertainty or doubts come? Do I immediately look to God or am I influenced by the world? "Is it wise to place our eternal well-being in the hands of strangers? Is it wise to claim enlightenment from those who have no light to give or who may have private agendas hidden from us? The only hands that I really trust are the Lord's and even those who I know really love me and want the best for me. I realize how I need to be careful in what sources I take counsel. The internet is not the source of all righteousness or even the great and spacious building, which represents the pride of the world. "We might feel too embarrassed to ask for help when we doubt...When we realize that the light and the comfort the Savior can extend to us are far too precious to lose to pride, then inspired Church leaders, parents, and trusted friends can help." I think of the Elder Uchtdorf saying the following; doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith. Moroni 7:13 "But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God." Light will always come from God. Light and clarity come from God; doubt and confusion do not. Do I doubt my doubts? Do I have doubts? How can I turn those into faith? Turn to God, seek him, the prayer of faith.

D&C 105 the early saints really struggled with giving to the poor, or giving what their substance to those in need. I think the key here is being selfless as opposed to being selfish. How am I doing with this? I find I struggle at times with this. How can I look at others without providing a critical eye? Do I hold onto my things (stuff) and not give thanks for what the Lord has blessed me with in my life?

D&C 106:5 "gird up your loins, that you may be the children of light". Video link describing what girding up your loins means .Girding up your loins means to prepare and work hard and give service. So, to become a child of light I need to give of myself, be selfless, and do the best that I can. D&C 107:99-100 "let every man learn his duty, and to act in the office in which he is appointed, in all diligence...he that is slothful shall not be counted worthy to stand." The Lord requires that one does their best with whatever they are entrusted. That is all that he can ask, but he does give us the Holy Ghost to be our guide. I think the key is diligence or I have been calling it consistency. Am I doing the best that I can in my callings, responsibilities? I don't have to be perfect, but am I striving to be better each day?

Oaks Strengthened by the Atonement of Jesus Christ "And he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities (Alma 7:12)...He is perfectly positioned to lift us and give us the strength we need to endure our afflictions. We have only to ask." How do I have the faith to ask and to trust that my prayers will be answered, to have hope that he will succor, uplift, heal, strengthen? Many times I don't recognize how he has blessed me and is carrying me. How do I increase my faith, hope, and charity?

D&C 109. Dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple vs. 44" But thy word be fulfilled. Help thy servants to say, with thy grace assisting them: Thy will be done, O Lord, and not ours." This is really interesting...I have to ask the Lord to help me to say that his will be done. Reasons: pride, selfishness but his Grace or the Atonement helps me to have the strength to let the Lord's will be done. The enabling power of the Atonement. It is much more than forgiveness for sins, but it can enable one to overcome his/her weaknesses and turn to God. He helps us turn to him. Elder Richard G. Scott said the following "Our Heavenly Father did not put us on earth to fail but to succeed gloriously." Another word for failure is succeeding and another word for succeeding is succeeding gloriously.

Mon 11/9 Beware of Pride (Ezra Taft Benson)
"The proud cannot accept the authority of God giving direction to their lives...the proud wish God to agree with them. They are interested in changing their opinions to agree with God's." When I think I know more than God and don't accept His direction in my life, this is pride!
CS Lewis: "Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man...It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone."
-Comparison, whether I come out on top or whether I am lacking, is always connected to pride. When I feel a lack of unity with those around me, this is pride creeping in. Only when I am routing for other people am I humble.

Tues 11/10 (Ezra Taft Benson) Beware of Pride
"When pride has a hold on our hearts, we lose our independence of the world and deliver our freedoms to the bondage of men’s judgment."- being humble allows to fill the directive to be "in the world but not of the world." Just as sin takes away our freedom, so does pride as it puts us in competition with the world and subjects us to their judgement.
D&C 60:2 "they hide the talent which I have given unto them, because of the fear of men." How often do I shy away from developing talents and fulfilling the measure of my own creation because I'm scared of what people think?
"[Pride] is manifest in so many ways, such as faultfinding, gossiping, backbiting, murmuring, living beyond our means, envying, coveting, withholding gratitude and praise that might lift another, and being unforgiving and jealous."---what struck me is the "withholding gratitude and praise that might lift another"-->how often do I think something positive and not vocalize it? When I actively seek to lift others, I am fighting pride. When I actively seek to increase and express gratitude, I am fighting pride. Go out of my way today to give sincere compliments or express gratitude to three people.

-listened to the talks of three new apostles and prophets this morning. I was struck with a feeling of gratitude for the service they render and how selfless their lives are. This is motivating for me to figure out what Heavenly Father wants from me and to sacrifice willingly. How can I magnify my calling more fully?

" The proud depend upon the world to tell them whether they have value or not. Their self-esteem is determined by where they are judged to be on the ladders of worldly success. [Pride] says, 'If you succeed, I am a failure.'"
"If we love God, do His will, and fear His judgment more than men’s, we will have self-esteem."-self esteem comes from living righteously and understanding our relationship to God. Where do I root my self esteem? Does it grow out of knowing I follow Christ the best I can? That kind of self esteem is unaffected by outward circumstances.

Why is trust so hard and why is trust so essential? I think by nature, trust implies that there will be at last some uncertainty, some level of doubt that you will need conquer or live with and that you will choose to believe regardless that it will all work out. Beautiful and terrifying and also what faith means entirely

Monday 11/2
D&C 90:24 "Search diligently, pray always, and be
believing, and all things shall work together for your good" The word
'diligently' is used so often in the Doctrine and Covenants. Scripture
study and prayer are essential along with faith (action) and hope, which comes
from the Holy Ghost as a result of using the Atonement of Christ. An
amazing promise of faithfully doing these things...ALL will turn out for the
best. How am I doing with this? Do a searching inventory.
D&C 88:63 "Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto
you".
Tuesday 11/3
Neill F. Marriot Yielding
Our Hearts to God. "With a growing understanding of the Lord's
grace and mercy, we will find that our self-willed hearts begin to crack and
break in gratitude." It is so easy to do want to it My Way, and it is
easier to not remember the Lord. How can I remember him? Meaningful
partaking of the sacrament, prayers of thanksgiving, turning to him in times of
trial...it seems like recognizing the daily blessings of the Lord turns hearts to
God. How often do I say "thank thee for all thy many
blessings?" or do I count them one by one? A challenge to thank the
Lord for five unique blessings each day. I like this..."His way is
the path that leads to happiness in this life..."
Wednesday 11/4
D&C 93:28 "He that keepeth his commandments
receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all
things." I had never thought that keeping the commandments would increase
one's intelligence (v. 29 "intelligence, or the light of truth"), knowledge,
and/or understanding. To increase my understanding/learning: 1) keep the
commandments, 2) pray always (v.49 "pray always) to increase faith, 3)
seek diligently through study (88:118 "seek ye diligently...even by study
and also by faith). From this I feel like the Lord puts greater emphasis
on keeping the commandments than on seeking learning and the blessings seem to
be greater. A blessing of obedience is increased knowledge and
understanding. I think this applies to all kinds of learning, not just the
spiritual, but the secular.
Thursday 11/5
D&C 97:21 "for this is Zion--The Pure In
Heart" What does it mean? To me one who utilizes the atonement daily in
their lives. How can I do this? Blessings of temple worship: v.13-14 "a
place of thanksgiving...a place of instruction...that they may be perfected in
the understanding of their ministry, in theory, in principle, and in doctrine,
in all things pertaining to the kingdom of God on the earth...my presence shall
be there, for I will come unto it, and all the pure in heart that shall come
unto it shall see God." If I want to be instructed and be more
grateful for my life and what I have, come to the temple. Go having
repented and it will be a more spiritual experience.
Friday 11/6
D&C 101:16 "be still and know that I am God."
What a strong directive. Don't worry, the Lord is there "all
flesh is in mine hands". This is where faith, hope and charity come
into play. Do I trust God enough to let him direct my life?...to go a
direction I hadn't planned on going?...or to be patient in the current
situation or trial? v.37 "care for the soul, and or the life of the
soul". That means both body and spirit. They both need
nourishment equally.
Saturday 11/7
D&C 101:81"for men ought always to pray and not to
faint" It seems like this is in most chapters. The Lord finds this
vitally important for all men to do. Prayer is an act of faith where
fainting to me is shrinking/turning away or becoming overcome. So in this
instance the Lord is saying that through prayer, doubts and fear can be
overcome and faith can be increased. How can I continue to pray?
When should I pray? Always to me is before any activity and even
during and after to give thanks. It is when life is hard and when it is
easy. Alma 37:37...counsel with the Lord and he shall direct thy paths.
Sunday 11/8
D&C 103-104 The saints really struggle with
seeking their own will and not the Lord's will. Why are people more
self-centered instead of God-centered? v.36 "All victory and glory is
brought to pass unto you through your diligence, faithfulness, and prayers of
faith." Consistency is key to success. Alma 37:6-7...it is by
the small and simple things that great things are brought to pass. How am
I doing with being consistent in the small and simple things? Do I put
the Lord first in my life? Do I do those simple things everyday that he
has asked me to do? It is so interesting again that the Lord talks about
prayer. How vitally important it is. D&C 104:12 "every man
give an account unto me of the stewardship which is appointed unto him."
Prayer is one way to doing this, seeking the Lord's will and then
reporting on it. I really like this verse 103:27 "for whoso layeth
down his life for my sake shall find it again."

November Week 1- Linds

Alma 47:36 Nephites dissenters are more hardened and wild than even the Lamanities- "having the same instruction and information as the Nephites"- what we do with what we are given has more of an impact on who we become than what we are given. What am I doing with my knowledge this week? Also, a caution that I need to treasure the light I have been given because Satan works even harder on those with light.
Tues Nov 3
Alma 48:7-9 preparation. Moroni had been "preparing the minds of the people to be faithful unto the Lord their God." What does "preparing my mind" consist of? Why is that essential in overcoming sin? So many of the negative experience We deal with are triggered with thoughts for positive or negative (see Alma 36:17-18?) Moroni also fortified all the weakest areas & the city in multiple levels. What are the different levels of my preparation? Spiritual habits are different levels of fortification.
Alma 48:12 Moroni's heart did "swell with thanksgiving"- gratitude is a principle of the Gospel.
3 things I am grateful for this morning (from yesterday):
1. I work on a committe of people (calling) that are responsive and willing to follow through with commitments.
2. The sense of family that exists within the church community- I don't always feel that in a singles ward, but I was reminded of this yesterday talking to a guy not LDS who just moved to UTAH and was struggling to find friends. After I went to FHE, I realized that I have a built-in support system and more so a built-in system in which I can feel useful as I serve.
3. Opportunity to expand my mind in graduate school- not only spiritually but also temporally. And even for free!

-difference between expressing gratitude, enacting gratitude, and living with gratitude--> what does it mean to live with gratitude?
-taking advantage of the blessings we have leads us to be less grateful.
-service and unselfishness breeds gratitude
Grateful: rainy day runs, hard work, and friends that know your imperfections and still stick around.

-missing Pres. Hinckley today. "If every husband and every wife would constantly do whatever might be possible to ensure the comfort and happiness of his or her companion, there would be very little, if any, divorce." The Women in our Lives (President Hinckley)
"You gave me wings to fly, and I have loved you for it." -Sister Hinckley
-I love this - true love gives people space to develop and encourages people to reach their full potential, not hold them back.
-Such a beautiful talk about women and marriage. Pres. Hinckley has a way of saying things so tenderly and yet powerfully. Any person who truly understands the doctrine of the church will be a feminist! (in a sense of the word).

Alma 34:38 "live in thanksgiving daily for the mercies and blessings he doth bestow upon you"
D&C 78:19 "he who receives all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea more."
-when I think of gratitude, I think of 1 Nephi 17: 1-3 although Nephi and his family could have focused on the difficulty of their journey, they chose to focus on the nourishing of God through their afflictions as their greatest blessing. In what ways do I witness that God nourishes me through hardship? Don't choose to dwell on hardship, choose to see the blessing of life itself and the nourishing power of God in our lives, and His providing means to accomplish much in our lives.

Alma 50:1-22 (esp vs. 1) Moroni "did not stop making preparations for war"--> Moroni could have easily thought, "Ok, I think we're good;" he obviously had spent extensive amounts of time preparing every aspect of their city. BUT NO! Are there times in my life when I mistakenly think that my spiritual preparation is good enough? Because it never is! There will never come a time in my life when "I'm good." It's always necessary and I always will need it. Struggling lately with motivation. Realizing that Satan is the author of that by making me think, "Ok you're good I think."
Alma 50:23 "there never was a happier time" (Mosiah 2:41 keeping commandments=true happiness, always)
"We might even say that having descended beneath it all, He is perfectly positioned to lift us and give us the strength we need to endure our afflictions."- The Atonement is the source of all healing from every affliction and the source of "strength to bear" Strengthened by the Atonement of Jesus Christ (Dallin H. "...the Lord's purpose is not simply to have people partake of bread and water. It is to have them keep a covenant that will move them along the path to eternal life. And for that to happen, the Lord must GIVE a spiritual experience to the person..." My purpose in taking the sacrament is to KEEP the covenant. Spiritual experiences are a gift from Heavenly Father.
